First Annual Messiah Sing!

May 2010 Concert Series

W.A. Mozart Mass in C minor, KV. 427 (417a)

As part of its first ten-year plan, the New Hampshire Master Chorale seeks to provide performances of new and innovative choral works, as well as fresh and vibrant interpretations of great choral masterpieces to audiences throughout New Hampshire.  Mozart’s “Great” Mass in C minor is one of the latter – a monumental  and powerful work that is rarely performed in our state.

Conducted by Dr. Daniel Perkins, the Master Chorale will collaborate with its professional chamber orchestra, four professional soloists (Emily Jaworski – soprano, Tania Mandzy – mezzo-soprano,  Matthew Anderson – tenor, Steven Small – baritone), and the Plymouth State University Chamber Singers  in two performances of the Mass on April 30, 2010 at St. Paul’s Church in Concord, New Hampshire and May 1, 2010 at Plymouth Congregational Church in Plymouth, New Hampshire.  Both performances are at 8pm.

The concert will also feature the premiere of an orchestral overture by Master Chorale’s composer-in-residence, Dr. Jonathan Santore.

These performances will be unique in that the 25-voice Master Chorale will seek to perform the work close to the manner in which Mozart may have conceived it, rather than imitating many modern performances which incorporate very large choirs in a highly romanticized style.

We seek to engage our strong and committed audience base, while expanding our target audience to include more university and public school students.  To this end, music director Dan Perkins has invited his Chamber Singers from Plymouth State University to join with the Master Chorale in these performances.

Voices of Light

Voices of Light                                Richard Einhorn

[Composer Richard Einhorn writes:]

The Passion of Joan of Arc was an inspiration for Voices of Light, but my goal

was to attempt a stand-alone work that would speak to various aspects of

Joan’s life and legend.

I decided to create a libretto that would consist primarily of excerpts from the

writings of ancient, female mystics chosen for their beauty as literature and

also for their relevance to themes in Joan’s life. In addition, I decided that all

the words sung in the score would be in ancient languages (Latin, Old and

Middle French, and Italian).

I didn’t want to have any characters in a conventional sense, but after reading

Joan of Arc’s military correspondence (although illiterate, Joan dictated her

letters to a scribe), I decided that I wanted her to make an appearance in my

piece, singing excerpts from her letters as well as some other texts that she

either certainly said or could have said.

Voices of Light is a meditation on the life and personality of Joan of Arc. The

piece explores the patchwork of emotions and thoughts that are stitched

together into the notion of a female hero. Such a hero invariably transgresses

the conventions and restrictions her society imposes. And Joan of Arc, the

illiterate teenage peasant girl who led an army wearing men’s clothing….

[and] became a saint -… transgressed them all.
